Dive Into the Stories of Artists Who Died Too Young in iHeartRadio’s New Music Podcast “27 Club” — Hosted by Jake Brennan from “Disgraceland”!
Jimi Hendrix has long been heralded as one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Unfortunately, he is also one of the many artists in the tragic and morbidly exclusive “27 Club,” which refers to a group of artists who have all died at the age of 27. And today, iHeartRadio and Jake Brennan, the host of the ever-popular true crime and music podcast “Disgraceland,” are bringing you a new music podcast about that group’s members in a show called “27 Club.”
“27 Club” explores the lives of legendary artists, including Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse and others and dives into the wild, fraught or unfortunate paths that led them to early deaths. But, perhaps more importantly, Brennan looks into how each of these artists shaped our culture along the way.
Season one kicks off with the in-depth story of American rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix. He grew up in Seattle, Washington and, at a very early age, taught himself how to play the guitar and fell in love with the instrument. After a stint in the army and some work playing backup guitar for other performers, Hendrix formed his own group, The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The band’s debut album — Are You Experienced — was an immediate success and later believed to be the greatest debut album in history. Soon Hendrix was dazzling stages and massive festivals (including Woodstock) worldwide and rose into superstardom amidst the glorious purple haze of sex, drugs and rock and roll that marked the late 1960s.
But sadly, in 1970, Hendrix was found dead in his apartment from an alleged drug overdose. In the “27 Club,” Brennan dives into Hendrix’s explosive career, lifestyle and experiences, and picks apart all of his lesser known stories — like running from the Mafia or stealing trucks with Neil Young to make it to Woodstock on time — to get a better picture of what brought on his early death and how his legacy still lives on to this day.
