Artist of the Week: BTS
K-Pop sensation BTS is back with a bang. The septet is bringing big disco energy with the release of a brand new song, “Dynamite,” which makes its global debut today.
The new jam marks a lot of firsts for the “Boy With Luv” rockers: the first single from their upcoming album “ARMY” (set to release later this year) and the first track by the group performed entirely in English.
BTS has featured English lyrics in many of their hit songs, but in 2019 said that they didn’t plan to ever sing fully in English because it would change their “identity.” Since then, the K-pop supergroup—which consists of members RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, V, Jimin and Jungkook—explains that things changed this year.
In a group interview, RM told USA Today: "Who would ever think of this pandemic? No meeting, no karaoke, no concerts? Even no walking in the park. So we never expected this song would come fully in English. During the process of making our album … it just came to us."
BTS has been unstoppable since hitting the music scene in 2013 with “No More Dream”—developing an international following that spans regions and smashes records. In 2018, the artists became the first K-pop group to debut at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 200, and last year’s Map of the Soul: Persona topped the Nielsen charts in physical album sales. Keeping up that momentum into 2020, BTS set a new record for the most-viewed livestream during an online performance in June.
