Celebrate Martin Luther King Day With iHeartRadio’s Custom Playlist of His Most Historic Speeches!
Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the day we remember the incredible life and work of one of America’s most important civil rights activists. To celebrate his legacy, iHeartRadio pulled together a playlist of some of his most historic speeches to help us all remember the power of his words.
This “MLK Day Playlist” includes King’s “I Have a Dream,” a 1963 public speech that Dr. King delivered during a civil rights march in Washington, D.C. It was delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and has long been heralded as one of the defining moments of the civil rights movement — as well as one of the most iconic speeches in American history. Listen today to hear every moment of this iconic oration, including one of its most quoted lines: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!”
Our playlist also includes the speech Dr. King made after accepting his Nobel Peace prize, titled “Accepting the Nobel Peace Prize.” In 1964, King won this international prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance and made an acceptance speech at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway. Listen in to hear some of the wisdom he shared like: “I accept this award today with an abiding faith in America and an audacious faith in the future of mankind. I refuse to accept despair as the final response to the ambiguities of history. I refuse to accept the idea that the ‘isness’ of man’s present nature makes him morally incapable of reaching up for the eternal ‘oughtness’ that forever confronts him.”
iHeartRadio’s “MLK Day Playlist” also includes another one of Dr. King’s famous sermons called “A Knock at Midnight.” He initially wrote it for a church service, but it was later published in his book Strength to Love. In “A Knock at Midnight,” Dr. King discusses the role of the church in the civil rights movement, stating: “But if the church will free itself from the shackles of a deadening status quo, and, recovering its great historic mission, will speak and act fearlessly and insistently in terms of justice and peace, it will enkindle the imagination of mankind and fire the souls of men, imbuing them with a glowing and ardent love for truth, justice, and peace.”
