The groovy, bassy new “Rumors” sees Lizzo return to Goddess form, literally—as both Lizzo and Cardi B don togas, adorn themselves in gold and channel Greek gods mythology in the music video, directed by Tanu Muino.
It marks the first (but hopefully, not the last) collaboration between the two hip hop megastars. Together, they address toxic internet and entertainment culture, brushing off the rumors and their haters with biting wit and cheeky lines like: “If you thought that I was ratchet with my a** hangin' out / Just wait until the summer when they let me out the house, b****.”
In fact, Lizzo even began starting rumors to promote “Rumors,” including that she was pregnant with Chris Evan’s baby. Cardi B, who is actually pregnant, shows off her real baby bump in the video—plated in gold, of course.
“Rumors” is Lizzo’s first new single in almost two years, with her last release being her soulful hit “Cuz I Love You.” Although Lizzo has been making music for more than a decade, her commercial breakthrough didn’t come until much later in 2017, when her single “Truth Hurts” became a viral sleeper hit two years after its initial release. The sudden success encouraged Lizzo to re-release songs like “Good as Hell,” which also went on to become a chart-topping hit, on Lizzo’s road to winning three Grammys and being named “Entertainer of the Year” by TIME in 2019.
Is the monumental collaboration with Cardi B on “Rumors” destined to become Lizzo’s next viral sensation? We’d put our money on it, but be among the first to hear the rapturous new jam to find out for yourself.
